Geri Bates – “Every artist has a beginning, and my interest started early in my childhood. Drawing and use of color were my major interests throughout my education. I started painting landscapes; and evolved into wildlife, seascapes, then still life subjects. It wasn’t until 1981 that I was encouraged to enter an art show in the Denver area. Much to my surprise, I sold my painting. That ignited my interest in learning more about oil painting. In 1991, I was introduced to a teacher who held workshops across the United States, teaching classical oil portraits like the old masters. I enrolled in his workshop in Boulder that year. I studied with Mr. Frank Covino for a total of ten years and became a coordinator for week-long workshops in the Montrose area for him. His method of teaching provided predictable, satisfying results.
Although oil painting is my foundation, I also enjoy working in pastels and charcoal. I have taken several classes from a variety of local artists. I strive to continue learning and growing in my craft and skill. Drawing and painting are my passions; it feeds my soul.”
